As pupils were returning to school this morning, one school was packing their van with all kinds of tins, packets and toilet rolls, destined for our very own Destitution Project! I think this is probably the seventh year that Mount St Joseph’s School have supported us in this way and they have now got it down to a fine art!
They started this mammoth project in late November when pupils were encouraged to bring in tinned goods for us and just to spice things up a bit, there was a competition between the different houses to see which one could collect the most tins! The end result was about 2,300!
At 8.00am the gentleman who drove the school minibus, began to pack it with all the “goodies”! He made it to us by mid-morning and the DP team then set to work to sort the tins into various categories – baked beans, soup, chickpeas etc! We were able to fill the empty shelves in our Food Store Room. You’d be surprised how colourful those shelves have become now they have been transformed from the drab emptiness to full shelves once more!
Not only do we want to thank the volunteers who put in a brilliant morning’s work and completed the unpacking in record time, but our special thanks must go to the pupils, their parents and the staff of Mount St Joseph’s School. Despite all the difficulties of working in a pandemic, they haven’t allowed that to stop them producing a magnificent collection and thinking of others worse off than themselves. We are also thrilled that they have been so loyal to us over so many years.
With friends and supporters like them, we can’t go far wrong!
