On Wednesday March 18th we saw the temporary closure of our regular Wednesday Drop-In where an average of 135 Asylum Seekers and Refugees come in per week.
Due to the onset of the Coronavirus and guided by local and national guidelines, a decision was made to suspend our Drop-In provision at the Victoria Hall. This decision was not taken lightly but was inevitable given the circumstances we all find ourselves in.
Despite the dire situation, DP has risen to the challenge. Before closing, we made plans to cater for all of our destitute service users. On Tuesday 17th March some of our volunteers were busy preparing food parcels and other domestic necessities such as soap and toilet rolls, etc. These along with food vouchers for the next four weeks were then given out the following day to each destitute service user (including those with families). Casework support led by our Caseworker and Assistant will continue remotely for as long as necessary. We will be able to keep in regular communication in each case and also advise any newly arrived asylum seekers (we have left emergency contact information for them at our normal venue). As you can see the good work will continue for the most needy and those in need of advice by phone or internet.
Where this will end we don't know but rest assured that as soon as we get the green light to reopen we have a great bunch of volunteers desperate to get back to doing what they have been doing so willingly and caringly for such a length of time.
