On Wednesday 21st June we all celebrated another successful Refugee Week (notwithstanding the fact that many of our service users are still aspiring to that status).
Many of our service users really made an effort to wear something special from their home countries, as did many DP team members - wonderful to see! Our English students started us off with heartfelt words and feelings that they had prepared in class. It is no small thing to stand up and speak to a room full of people in a language not your own!
The theme for this year's celebration was Compassion and the refugees and asylum seekers who attended on the day enjoyed some of the related colouring activities on the Art table. Identifying their respective homeland on the world map with pins and post-it notes prompted interest and laughter; the cluster of post-its on Africa and the Middle East told its own story.
After lunch one of our volunteers, Irina, sang for us and we enjoyed a range of 'world music' throughout the day which prompted some delightful impromptu singing and dancing, especially from the Albanian ladies.
