The Margaret Cary Foundation & Emmaus Partner With DP To Help Our Service Users Get Around - Thanks to the Margaret Carey Foundation, a new collaboration has been set up where refurbished bicycles are donated to the Destitution Project (DP).
The bikes have been restored by CHAINS (Change, Help and Advance in New Skills), which enables prisoners to take part in purposeful activity and encourages and promotes better job prospects upon release.
The CHAINS workshop is supported by the Margaret Carey Foundation, which supplies bikes and distributes them to families and organisations, where they are needed most.
As you can imagine, for asylum seekers and refugees, bicycles can make all the difference in day to day life. Recipients can get more easily to appointments, classes and the supermarket. One of our first recipients has had to walk 45 minutes to get to the DP Drop-In each Wednesday. Another has a metal pin in his leg but will now be able to cycle instead of walk long distances, taking a lot of pressure off his leg. They will all become less isolated as a result of this wonderful new partnership.
Emmaus Bolton, a long-time supporter of DP, is helping us to store the bikes. We identify DP service users most in need and then link them up with Emmaus where they can chose one of our bicycles. DP gives each new cyclist a bike lock, helmet, hi-viz jacket, a map of cycle roads around Bolton and a sheet with the Highway Code tips for cyclists and some key basic road signs. If anyone would like to help cover the cost of locks and helmets, please get in touch with us at: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
