Volunteers, staff and Trustees of the Destitution Project, on Wednesday 28 th April 2021, recognised the annual Workers’ Memorial Day at the request of Bolton Council with a Minutes Silence at 11.00am.
This year special attention was given to all those who have lost their lives or had life changing impacts as a consequence of working on the frontline as part of the Covid-19 response.
Paul Barnes, the Drop in Coordinator, introduced the moment with an explanation of the background to the event. The message for 2021 is: “Health and Safety is a fundamental workers’ right”. The International Workers’ Memorial Day is commemorated each year by unions and safety campaigners around the world and helps to highlight the importance of safety measures to protect the health and wellbeing of everyone in the work-place. Paul reflected on the serious approach that the Destitution Project takes to health and safety in its regular Risk Assessments and, at this moment in time. when an extra Covid-19 risk assessment and a range of measures are in place in keeping with Government Guidelines.
